Where did all the Instax Square cameras go?

March 1, 2026 By Dan Finnen

I’m currently working on a review of the Instax Mini 41 camera (coming very soon!) and I noticed something strange: there don’t seem to be any Instax Square cameras on sale in the United States. Third party resellers have the SQ1 listed at inflated prices here and there, but there’s no sign of the SQ1 or SQ40, the only two current Instax Square cameras, on official first-party distributors like B&H, Adorama, or Best Buy.

It doesn’t seem like everything is temporarily out of stock either. B&H has completely hidden its listings for the cameras, and if you’re able to dig up the pages from old URLs you’ll see that it has been listed as discontinued rather than on backorder.

A clue to what is going on might be found in these news stories about ongoing litigation between Polaroid and Fujifilm over the iconic white border. It’s no secret that Instax Square apes the look of classic Polaroid frames (albeit, while being quite a bit smaller). I can’t find any information on if Fuji was ordered to cease production or if they came to some kind of agreement, but I assume the case is still ongoing (please keep in mind, I’m not a reporter, just a humble blogger).

On a historical side note: many years ago Fujifilm paid Polaroid to license instant film tech so they wouldn’t get sued into oblivion like Kodak did with its Instamatic series. When Polaroid shut down its instant film lines in 2008, Fuji Instax kept chugging along until instant film blew up with customers – and they were the only one left. The Impossible Project eventually resurrected (and became) Polaroid, but the formulation is completely different, and Fuji Instax film is actually closer to the Polaroid of old in many ways. There’s a whole lot of history between these two companies.

Fuji’s official website still has the SQ1 and SQ40 listed as current cameras as of March 2026, so there’s no indication that they’ve officially ceased production. Perhaps they’re still selling Instax Square outside the US market? If you’re outside the US, let me know if these cameras are still on your shelves.

If Fuji were to discontinue the entire Instax Square line that would be a shame. I think the frame size is an ideal compromise between a frame big enough to be usable while still keeping the cameras delightfully small. I much prefer it to Instax Mini and the cameras are way nicer to use than the frustrating Instax Wide cameras Fuji makes.

If you already have a Fuji Instax square camera, it might not be a bad idea to stockpile some film before supplies dry up alongside the cameras. Here’s a link to where you can find it on Amazon, where already some variants are out of stock.
