2016 Polaroid Camera Buying Guide Update

October 30, 2016 By Dan Finnen

The past and future of Polaroid.

The I-1 joins a list of instant film legends.

Can you believe it? The 2016 holiday season is already right around the corner, and that means a lot of people are going to be out there getting instant film cameras as gifts. In addition to my new Fuji Instax Buying Guide, I’ve also updated my Polaroid Camera Buying Guide.

By and large, most of the guide has stayed the same, but 2016 saw the Impossible Project I-1 camera burst onto the scene, and it’s made not one, but two new spots on the list. First off, the I-1 is the ultimate self portrait machine. What was once a daunting and imprecise task with older cameras is breeze with the I-1 and it’s ability to use a smartphone as a remote shutter. The I-1 is also a great camera for pros who crave detailed, precise control. Never before has there been an instant film camera that allows the user to control aperture, shutter speed, and more. It’s all possible thanks to the I-1’s ingenious connection to the smartphone app. Before I used the camera myself, I worried that connecting it to a phone via bluetooth would be a pain, but the connection is robust and works even better than pairing a phone to a car or speakers.
